SPEECH THERAPY

At SVMC, we are committed to reaching patients of all ages who experience communication disorders and swallowing dysfunction. Impairments in communication and swallowing can have dramatic effects on patients’ independent functioning in the home, school, work, and social environments. They can affect quality of life, relationships with family and friends, and confidence.

Communication disorders include deficits in receptive language, expressive language, social language, voice, articulation and motor speech, and cognition. We work closely with patients and their families to develop or regain skills to promote independence and improve quality of life.

Swallowing disorders can lead to weight loss, dehydration, malnutrition, pneumonia, and other severe consequences. We evaluate and treat swallowing disorders with a combination of restorative and compensatory approaches with the goal of safe and efficient oral intake and enjoyment of eating and drinking.   

Our team of nationally licensed speech-language pathologists provide speech therapy services across our healthcare system. Using individualized plans of care, we are able to evaluate and treat patients with diagnoses such as head and neck cancer, stroke, progressive neurological disorders, autism, and developmental disorders of speech and language.
