Located primarily in our Breast Health and Imaging Center, Suite 206 of the Medical Office Building, SVMC’s advanced digital mammography services and computer-aided detection allows for clearer images and better diagnosis of any breast abnormalities. Thanks to digital technology, your radiologist can manipulate the contrast of the images, making them darker or lighter, allowing for the masses and calcifications to be more readily identified. Images can also be enlarged on screen to give your physician a better look at areas of concern.

Digital mammography is just one element our nationally accredited Breast Care Program. As a patient in the program, you will work with our Breast Health Navigator. A registered nurse, the Breast Health Navigator will guide you through the diagnostic process — reviewing test results with you, answering questions, facilitating communication between you and your doctor(s), and simply being a source of support and guidance.

At SVMC, we use state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment to reveal medical information that in the past may have only been discovered through surgery. From diagnosing and assessing conditions in the abdomen, breast, thyroid, uterus and other areas of the body to guiding procedures including biopsies and drainages, ultrasound provides quick and painless images, allowing the radiologist and your doctor to better assess your case and make a more informed plan for your care.

SVMC is home to one of the most advanced CT imaging devices available in southern Vermont. The Toshiba 64-Slice Aquilion scanner creates clear, high-quality, three-dimensional images while significantly reducing the radiation dose per image.

Your doctor may suggest a CT scan to help diagnose a variety of illnesses and injuries including cancers, heart attacks, bone fractures, strokes, and internal trauma. The technology is also called upon to guide the radiologists in performing biopsies, drainages, and pain control procedures.

CTs are fast, painless, and one of the radiologist’s most effective tools for diagnosing problems and, working with your doctor, putting together a plan for treatment and recovery.

Early and accurate diagnoses are key to resolving health issues. MRI is just one of the tools your SVMC care team may use to diagnosis your condition. Unrivaled in its ability to produce detailed images of soft tissue the body—which cannot be seen as well using X-rays—MRI is painless and often essential to creating the best outcomes possible.

MRIs are completely pain-free and often used for diagnoses related to the brain, joints, breasts, soft tissues and, more recently, the prostate.

The wars on cancer require some heavy artillery. At SVMC, we are armed with a state-of-the-art PET/CT scan. Using this non-invasive procedure, your radiologist is able to determine the presence and extent of most cancers and neurodegenerative disease. This revolutionary technology allows our care teams to save and improve more lives than ever. Providers wishing to schedule a PET/CT should call (866) 235-7226.

Unlike other imaging techniques that allow the radiologist to see different organs in your body, nuclear imaging actually shows how those organs are performing. Often used to diagnose and determine the severity of many types of cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and kidney-related issues, nuclear medicine offers the potential to identify disease in its earliest stages as well as track a patient’s response to specific interventions. With the exception of a single injection of a low-dose radioactive substance, the procedure is noninvasive and performed here in the comfortable surrounds of SVMC.

When you’re suffering from back, neck, or joint pain, finding relief is all that matters. Using the latest advances in interventional radiology, SVMC’s skilled radiologists and technologists can deliver relief right where it’s needed. Guided by detailed images created by our mobile c-arm device, joint injections and spinal epidurals can be delivered with pinpoint precision, bringing you relief right where and when you need it.

The oldest imaging procedure used at SVMC, X-rays are often the first step your doctor will take in diagnosing your health issue. Quick and painless, X-rays can detect fractured bones, abnormal bone growth or disease; reveal problems of the chest or GI tract; locate foreign objects; and help in various interventional procedures.  In order to provide the fastest diagnosis and treatment possible, SVMC’s X-ray services are available 24/7.

X-ray services also are available at Northshire Medical Center, Deerfield Valley Medical Center, SVMC Orthopaedics, Express Care and Mountain Medical Services.
