SVMC Launches New Anesthesiology Practice

BENNINGTON, VT—June 11, 2021—Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC), has announced that their anesthesiology services will now be provided through SVMC Anesthesiology and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Physicians. The practice has hired several highly experienced anesthesiologists.

Shaan Alli, MD, medical director, earned his medical degree at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and a bachelor’s in biology from Bernard M. Baruch College, both in New York. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Stony Brook Medical Center, his residency at Tufts Medical Center in Massachusetts, and a fellowship in Critical Care Anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Andrew Caughey, III, MD, attended both college and medical school at the University of Michigan. He graduated with his medical degree in 1981. He completed internships in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Internal Medicine at Northwestern University and Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, respectively. Both are in Illinois. He continued with residencies in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. He has worked at Anesthesia Associates of Ann Arbor, P.C., since 1992. He is a diplomat of the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology.

Anthony Fazzone, MD, received his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed two residencies in surgery, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and Abington Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania, before completing a residency in anesthesiology at the then Fletcher Allen Healthcare, which is now University of Vermont Medical Center. In addition, he holds master’s degrees in physiology and human nutrition. He has worked throughout Vermont at Gifford Medical Center, University of Vermont Medical Center, and Springfield Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Selina Long, MD, earned her medical degree at the University of Vermont and her bachelor’s in Biology from the University of Chicago in Illinois. She completed an internship at McGaw Medical Center in Chicago, her residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at Children’s Hospital Boston. Most recently, she has been an assistant professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Guy Tousignant, MD, is originally from Quebec. He received his medical degree at McGill University in Quebec. He completed a fellowship in cardiac anesthesia with Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital. Since 1999, he has served as an attending anesthesiologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center and an associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

Emmett Whitaker, MD, received his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology and Spanish from Niagara University in New York in 2002. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Mercy Medical Center and a residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and fellowships both in anesthesiology research and pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, both in Maryland.

The practice provides general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and pain control for procedures conducted at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. It is located at 100 Hospital Drive in Bennington. Call (802) 447-5590 for more information.
