Help & Hope Through SVMC's High Risk Breast Cancer Program
While all women are at risk for breast cancer, not all women have the same risk.
For women at higher risk, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s General Surgery offers a High Risk Breast Cancer Program—a comprehensive, long-term surveillance program.
You may be a candidate for the program if you have:
- A known genetic mutation
- A family history of breast or ovarian cancer
- Received radiation to the trunk of your body before age 30
- A personal history of abnormal breast biopsy, including lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) or atypical hyperplasia
- Multiple breast biopsies
Our breast cancer experts will provide you with a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of your personal risk for developing breast cancer and develop a monitoring and surveillance plan designed to give you peace of mind.
In addition to regular screenings, your plan may include:
- High risk breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasounds, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Genetic counseling and testing for gene mutations associated with breast cancer
- Coordination with high-risk services for gynecological cancers
- Preventive medication and treatment options
- Preventive surgery
- Lifestyle modifications
