In much the same way that oxygen is vital to your life, understanding how your lungs are working is vital to helping you be well. Using state-of-the-art testing, SVMC’s Pulmonary Function Laboratory enables your doctor to see how well your lungs are functioning. This information is critical to making a proper diagnosis about your condition and takes you one step closer to breathing easier about your health.
Accredited by The Joint Commission, SVMC’s Pulmonary Function Laboratory offers a variety of testing options for patients with lung diseases such as emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, obstructive or restrictive lung disease, and pneumocystis pneumonia. All testing is performed by trained Registered Respiratory Therapists with results read by a board-certified pulmonologist.
Spirometry provides your doctor with a quick and easy way to tell how well your lungs are working. Conducted here at SVMC, spirometry simply requires you to blow into a tube. Using the data gathered, your doctor can diagnose diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis and monitor the treatment and progression of various diseases and conditions.
There’s more to lung health than just breathing in and out. In order to find out how much oxygen and other gases are moving through your lungs, your doctor may request a gas exchange study. Using a few blood samples drawn from a finger prick, your doctor can quickly determine how well gases are being absorbed into your blood from your lungs.
