Celebrate Juneteenth in Downtown Bennington

The community is invited to come together to celebrate Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 19 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. in Merchant’s Park and at the Mission City Church.

This historic holiday commemorating what is considered to be the effective end of slavery in the US has been observed since June 19, 1865.

The community celebration will include brief educational presentations on the history of the holiday by Mia Schultz of the NAACP, slavery in early Vermont by Callie Raspuzzi of the Bennington Museum, and the three black members of the Green Mountain Boys by local history author Phil Holland.

In addition, there will numerous free activities for kids and families sponsored by UCS, the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce, the Bennington Rotary, Sunrise Family Resource Center and the Better Bennington Corporation.

Plus, there will be live music and treats including cotton candy and red velvet cake.
