Rebecca Filson, NP, Joins SVMC’s Hospital Medicine Department

The Hospital Medicine Department at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) is pleased to welcome Nurse Practitioner Rebecca Filson. Filson has worked as a registered nurse on the medical floors, the intensive care unit, and as a clinical care coordinator at SVMC since 2011. With this appointment, Filson transitions from the nursing team to the medical staff and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Medical Group.

“Rebecca emerged as a leader early on in her career at SVMC,” said James Poole, hospitalist director, and medical director of medical affairs at Southwestern Vermont Health Care. “It is gratifying to see her take this new position on our team.”

Filson earned a post-master’s family nurse practitioner certificate from the University of Massachusetts in 2017 and a master’s degree in Nursing from the University of San Diego in California in 2011. In addition, she holds a bachelor’s in sociology from Wesleyan University.

“It’s exciting and humbling,” Filson said. “I just feel such deep gratitude for the mentors that have helped pull me up and grow me as a practitioner.”

She has served as a chairperson of the Professional Practice Council; as Critical Care Consortium liaison; and as a member of the Nursing Strategic Planning Committee, the Hospital Ethics Committee, and on several task forces. She was a nominee for SVMC’s Magnet Nurse of the Year. She is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and an inductee of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. In addition, she was a recipient of the Helen Kunzleman scholarship through SVMC.

Filson is grateful to many of her physician and nurse colleagues for their encouragement and support, including her University of Massachusetts preceptors Dr. Martin Luloff, Dr. Malcolm Paine, and Dr. Robin Tarnas; Dr. James Poole; Dr. Marinshine Gentler; and her fellow nurses who worked with her in the Intensive Care Unit.

“They helped me learn and grow as an ICU nurse and helped push me forward,“ Filson said.

Director of Human Resources Polly Cipperly noted, “Becca is exceptional in so many ways, but her drive to increase her skills and the professional encouragement she has received are the norm at SVMC.“ Cipperly continued, “Many of our clinical and non-clinical staff find that Southwestern Vermont Health Care is a great place to grow their careers and advance.“
