SVMC Emergency Care team brings decades of collective experience to every case. Whether it’s a broken bone, a potential heart attack or major trauma, the care and well-being of every patient is critical to us.

SVMC’s Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day and treats over 25,000 patients a year, many with life-threatening conditions.

All of our physicians are board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and many nurses hold emergency nursing certification. All Registered Nurses in the department are certified in basic and advanced cardiac life support.  Many are certified in  pediatric advanced life support, trauma nurse critical care, and trauma nurse pediatrics as well as hold National Certification in specialty area of nursing.

We provide timely and appropriate care to every patient. In instances where patients require specialized services beyond the scope of our medical center, we provide stabilization and helicopter or ground transfer to academic medical centers including Dartmouth Hitchcock, Albany Medical Center and St. Peter’s Hospital as well as other major facilities in Massachusetts and New York.

We operate an Emergency Crisis Area for patients and their families dealing with behavioral health issues. This locked, three-bed unit provides safe care and comprehensive assessment services in conjunction with United Counseling Services.

In addition, our team include Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) specifically trained in the care and counseling of individuals who have suffered sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence. Their compassionate and skilled handling of these particularly sensitive situations is essential to the healing and recovery process for these patients.
