Dr. James R. Whittum Joins SVMC Orthopaedics

BENNINGTON —SVMC Orthopaedics welcomes Orthopaedic Surgeon James R. Whittum, M.D. Originally from Ohio, Dr. Whittum has practiced in the Bennington and North Adams areas for 18 years as a member of the medical staffs of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) and North Adams Regional Hospital.
“I really love this part of the country and all it has to offer,” said Dr. Whittum. “It’s a beautiful place to live and a wonderful place to practice.”
Dr. Whittum received his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. He completed residencies in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Il.
“Both my grandfathers were physicians,” said Dr. Whittum, “so I think becoming one myself was in my blood. Combine their influence with the interest I always had in science, and medicine was the perfect profession for me.
“When I was in medical school, I really found my niche in orthopaedic medicine,” he added. “It brings me great satisfaction to know that I get to work with patients of all ages and that I can help them get back to their previous level or an even better level of performance after an injury or trauma to their body.”
As an active person, Dr. Whittum can relate to the set-backs injuries can cause for someone. “I’m here to assist my patients in getting back to the activities they enjoy and do everyday,” he said, “whether they want to return to marathon running or just be able to walk up a flight of stairs without their knees hurting.”
Dr. Whittum has an interest in all areas of orthopeadic surgery except for surgery of the spine.
“It’s important to me,” he added, “that I’m able to help my patients get back to the quality of life they desire.”
Dr. Whittum also enjoys spending time with his family, including his daughters Emma, 15, and Samantha, 11. As someone who appreciates the outdoors, he participates in several outdoor activities including mountain biking, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Dr. Whittum is now available to see patients at SVMC Orthopaedics at 332 Dewey Street in Bennington. To make an appointment with him, call (802) 442-6314.
