BENNINGTON — The American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging has designated Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s (SVMC) Imaging Department as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. SVMC is the second hospital in Vermont and the only hospital in central and southern Vermont to earn this designation.

The ACR names a hospital or health system as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence only after the health system has passed several voluntary but rigorous breast imaging programs and modules. The health system also must have passed the ACR’s mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

“This is very exciting news and an important part of SVMC’s commitment to delivering world-class breast care to patients,” said Dr. James F. Keenan, department chair for SVMC’s Imaging Services. “SVMC is dedicated to providing our patients with the most advanced, highest quality imaging services.”

Being a Center of Excellence means that imaging staff have achieved the most up-to-date training in their modalities related to breast imaging. The radiologists must be board certified and have expertise in breast imaging. SVMC also had to be voluntarily accredited in the modalities of breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, and stereotactic breast biopsy.

“The ACR certification program is rigorous and thorough,” stated Dr. Keenan. “It assures staff that they can continue to measure their work against national standards in imaging excellence. Our patients are getting high-quality care, close to home.”

The designation also allows SVMC to participate in the National Mammography Database (NMD) free of charge. The NMD is a collection of data related to the full range of breast disease from across the United States. It offers comparative information and provides reports on the collected data.

Diagnostic imaging is a vital part of SVMC’s Breast Care Program, which earned full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers in September 2010.

“With this accreditation, patients with breast disease can feel secure in knowing that SVMC’s imaging services meet or exceed national care standards,” added Dr. Elizabeth Warner, general surgeon and co-chair of SVMC’s breast program leadership.

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center is Vermont’s first Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence. SVMC is part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care, an integrated health system providing care for patients in Bennington and Windham Counties in Vermont, Rensselaer and Washington Counties in New York, and Berkshire County in Massachusetts. SVHC includes the VNA & Hospice of SVHC, the Centers for Living & Rehabilitation, and the SVMC Northshire and Deerfield Valley Campuses. To learn more about SVHC, visit svhealthcare.org.
