SVMC Welcomes Family Practice and Palliative Care Physician to the Northshire
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MANCHESTER CENTER — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s Northshire Campus welcomes Dr. Allen C. Hutcheson, a family practice and palliative care physician who will join their medical staff on Sept. 1.
Dr. Hutcheson received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., and is certified by both the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He completed his residency in urban family practice at Beth Israel Medical Center and Institute for Urban Family Health in New York, N.Y., and a fellowship in pain and palliative care at Beth Israel Medical Center, also in New York City.
Originally from South Carolina, Dr. Hutcheson has most recently served as the Bronx, N.Y., regional medical director for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care. Before that, he was an attending physician for the Palliative Care Service in the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, also in the Bronx. In this role he also served as a family medicine physician at Fordham Family Practice.
“My wife is from the North Bennington area and for years we’ve talked about living full-time in Vermont, instead of just visiting regularly,” said Dr. Hutcheson. “When I heard about the opening in the Northshire for a primary care physician, it seemed like an ideal fit for me. I know people will laugh, but I’m actually looking forward to shoveling snow because I never got to do it while growing up.
“Upon visiting, I was immediately impressed with how comprehensive the services are at SVMC’s Northshire Campus,” added Hutcheson. “I originally became a family practice doctor because I saw it as a way to work with people of all ages, helping them to achieve their best quality of life. SVMC values the patient and their safety above everything else, a philosophy that matches perfectly with how I see my role as a physician.
“I know medical care can seem complicated at times between medical screenings and tests, medications and the nuances of treatments,” he remarked. “I think it’s important that, as a physician, I be there as a source of information and motivation for my patients as they manage their personal health and wellness.”
Dr. Hutcheson and his wife, Jessie, have two girls; Lily, age five, and Martha, age three. Together, the family enjoys going for bicycle rides, playing soccer and just enjoying the outdoor opportunities available in southern Vermont.
“My wife and I are really excited to be close to her family for the girls and we’ve always enjoyed the beauty of the area,” said Dr. Hutcheson.
To make an appointment with Dr. Hutcheson, call (802) 362-4440. SVMC’s Northshire Campus is on Route 7A North, 5957 Main St., in Manchester Center.
