Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon Joins SVMC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BENNINGTON — Dr. Marthe A. Gabey, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has joined SVMC General Surgery at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC). With an office in Troy, N.Y., for more than 14 years, Gabey hopes to bring her surgical expertise closer to patients in eastern N.Y. and Vermont who could benefit from her experience.
“All my patients have a story,” said Gabey. “I enjoy getting to know them and how I can tailor my skills to help them recover or feel better about themselves.”
Gabey received her medical degree from and completed a residency in general surgery at The Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Va. “I originally thought I would go into pediatrics,” said Gabey. “But, when I did a surgery rotation, I fell in love with it!”
Gabey then completed a residency in plastic surgery at Albany Medical Center. “Plastic and reconstructive surgery is a mixture of science and art,” she added. “As a doctor, it is very fulfilling to know that you can assess a patient’s issue like breast reconstruction, use your skills to fix the issue, and then witness the positive results.”
For Gabey, the thrill of being a surgeon is mostly about restoring a positive body image for those who have been affected by physical trauma or an illness such as breast cancer. “It brings me great satisfaction to know that I can help someone feel beautiful and whole again after a trauma or illness has affected his or her body.”
Gabey is excited about coming to SVMC. “This really is a little gem of a hospital,” she stated. “I had trained with Dr. Edmond, a surgeon who recently practiced here, and he asked me to come to SVMC. I was immediately impressed with how up-to-date the technology is, as well as how the staff treats each patient as an individual. Not many hospitals, big or small, can be at the forefront both in quality and personalized care.”
Gabey lives in Troy with her 16-year-old son, Alexander, her boyfriend, Ken, and her two dogs. Someone who likes to stay busy, she enjoys golf, local concerts and events, and growing her own tomatoes. She also is an avid New York Yankees and Bruce Springsteen fan.
