BENNINGTON — Dr. Eric Siegel, the newest obstetrician/gynecologist at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), admits that personal experience had something to do with his pursing that specialty. The father of three children ages five, six and seven has gathered a bit of first-hand knowledge about how quality obstetric care can make a difference for a new or growing family.

“I’ve known since I was young that I wanted to be a doctor,” stated Dr. Siegel. “But once I saw what my wife went through with her pregnancies and did my rotation in obstetrics and gynecology, I was sure this was the area of medicine for me.”
Dr Siegel received his undergraduate degree from Castleton State College and his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in the Caribbean. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, W.V.

“I didn’t realize there was so much variety in obstetrics and gynecology until my personal experience and training proved otherwise,” stated Dr. Siegel. “It is an area of practice where there are different challenges and experiences every day. Yet, I love that I can also form a long-lasting bond with my patients. As an OB/Gyn, you are often involved in a women’s medical care long-term. Forming productive and caring relationships with my patients is very important to me as a doctor.”

Dr. Siegel has long associations with healthcare and New England, growing up in upstate New York and Richford, Vt. He was a volunteer emergency care attendant with the Richford Ambulance Service and later served as a medical specialist and emergency medical technician in the U.S. Army for four years. Dr. Siegel also served administratively in the Army reserves and worked in healthcare coding and billing in the Rutland area.

“I was born in Belgium,” said Dr. Siegel, “but most of my childhood was spent in New England. My wife and I knew we wanted to return to Vermont to be close to our families, and because we love this area of the country. This is like a homecoming for us.

“I was immediately impressed with SVMC and with the high-quality care they offer in a community hospital,” he added. “It has a more personal feel while still offering state-of-the-art care.”

Dr. Siegel will share an office with Dr. Themarge Small beginning July 6. SVMC Obstetrics and Gynecology is in Suite 302 in the Medical Office Building at 140 Hospital Dr.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Dr. Small,” said Dr. Siegel. “I know that she is well-loved by our patients and is indeed a hard act to follow. I’m excited to become a part of such a great healthcare team.”

Dr. Siegel lives in Shaftsbury with his wife, Sylvia, and their three children, Joshua, seven; Caitlyn, six; and Sarah, five. Together the family enjoys the outdoors with such activities as fishing, bike riding and skiing.
