Local Executive Earns Top Healthcare Management Credential

BENNINGTON – Dr. Mark Novotny, interim vice president for SVMC Medical Group at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) recently became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), the nation’s leading professional society for healthcare leaders.

To obtain fellow status, candidates must fulfill multiple requirements, including passing a comprehensive examination, meeting academic and experiential criteria, earning continuing education credits, and demonstrating professional and community involvement. Fellows are also committed to ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years. Fellow status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Only 7,500 healthcare executives hold this distinction.

“I am honored to have achieved board certification in health care management,” stated Novotny. “Similar to my clinical board certification, this designation requires significant experience in health care management; a demonstrated commitment to the community with projects like the Blueprint for Health, and formal education in management. The examination included all facets of healthcare, such as finance, law, human resources, quality improvement, and information technology.”

Novotny also noted that for physician executives, being a Fellow lets healthcare managers and leaders know that a clinically-trained individual has the management training needed in complex healthcare organizations.

The ACHE is an international professional society of more than 30,000 healthcare executives who lead the nation’s hospitals, healthcare systems, and other healthcare organizations. ACHE is known for its credentialing, educational programs, and its journal, the Journal of Healthcare Management and the magazine, Healthcare Executive.

SVMC is a part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC). SVHC is a community-based, not-for-profit charitable organization that exists solely for the benefit of the communities it serves. SVHC has a vision to make the communities it serves the healthiest in the nation.
