BENNINGTON – The Emergency Department at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) has won top honors in the United States for patient satisfaction for a fourth year in a row.

Press Ganey is an independent company that measures quality of care at healthcare facilities nationwide. They present the Summit Award, their “most prestigious designation,” to hospital services which rank in the 95th percentile for patient satisfaction for a minimum of three consecutive years.
SVMC’s Emergency Department is one of only 23 Emergency Departments to receive a Summit Award in 2009 and one of only four to be recognized with a Summit Award four years in a row.
“This is a wonderful accomplishment and a true testament to the quality of care we provide,” stated Thomas Dee, President and CEO of SVMC. “Receiving a Summit Award for the fourth year in a row is a verification of the passion and dedication our staff has for our patients. Congratulations to the nurses, physicians, and all the clinical and support staff at SVMC who helped to win this award.”
Press Ganey is a national company that administers patient satisfaction surveys for thousands of healthcare facilities in the United States. Emergency services at SVMC were compared with those same services at hundreds of hospitals of all sizes, from small rural hospitals to large teaching hospitals affiliated with medical colleges.
SVMC was the first hospital in Vermont and the first in Northern New England to win a Summit Award. The health system has used Press Ganey to measure patient satisfaction since the 1990s.
Designated as the first Magnet hospital for Nursing Excellence in Vermont and recognized as a Mentor hospital, SVMC continuously pursues high patient satisfaction. The American Nurses’ Credentialing Center names Magnet hospitals after a rigorous review. SVMC is one of only 354 Magnet hospitals nationwide.
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent non-profit organization focused on the improvement of healthcare worldwide. IHI designates Mentor Hospitals to provide support, advice, and clinical expertise on health care treatments.
SVMC is a part of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC). SVHC is a community-based, not-for-profit health system that exists solely for the benefit of its community. SVHC has a vision to make the communities it serves the healthiest in the nation.
