BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) has opened a nationwide search for a new chief executive officer (CEO). The health system's board of trustees has engaged a well-known search firm, Witt/Kieffer, to identify and screen qualified candidates. The announcement was made to SVHC staff June 3.
"The board has a responsibility to our community to select the most qualified candidate to lead our health system," explained Dr. Richard Guerrero, board chairman. "Our interim CEO, Dr. Mark Novotny, is successfully steering the health system through challenging times. We are confident in his leadership. The board welcomes Dr. Novotny's interest in becoming a candidate for the permanent position. However, it is the board's duty to conduct a national search for such an important position."
The board of trustees has formed a search committee to work with Witt/Kieffer. Michael Brady, DDS, vice chairman of the board, will lead the committee, which includes representatives from the board, the medical staff, and nursing. The search process will begin in mid June with a series of discussions with the board, physicians, and senior managers designed to help the committee decide the parameters of the search.
“The search process will begin by gathering input from individuals within the SVHC community," Brady explained. "This will help us determine the ideal candidate profile.
"Although our health system is addressing serious economic challenges, we know that the dedication of SVHC’s staff and the outstanding quality of care delivered at SVHC will help us attract strong candidates," Brady added.
The committee plans to interview candidates in early fall. Finalists will return for more extensive meetings which will include a variety of stakeholders from within the health system community. “The board’s goal is to announce a selection late this coming fall,” said Guerrero.
Founded in 1969, Witt/Kieffer is the largest search firm in the country whose focus is exclusively working with hospitals, health systems, and higher education organizations.
"The search committee reviewed multiple search firms and chose Witt/Kieffer based on their extensive work recruiting CEOs for hospitals at a national level, but also based on their track record with New England hospitals and their knowledge of Vermont," Brady explained.
