MANCHESTER -- Orthopedic Surgeon Robert W. Westergan, MD, has joined the staff of the Northshire Campus of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC). Dr. Westergan has a special interest in non-surgical approaches for the care of musculoskeletal disorders and also in the prevention of fractures from low bone mineral density.
Dr. Westergan received his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Yale University and then a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
After his fellowship, Dr. Westergan joined the Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic, P.A., in Winter Park, Fla., and later became a member of the academic faculty at Brown University. “I found that participating in the education and training of medical students, interns, and orthopedic residents was very beneficial,” said Dr. Westergan. “I really enjoyed the experience of teaching others.”
The Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic invited Dr. Westergan back as their medical director in 1995, where he continued to practice office-based orthopedic surgery until the summer of 2008. “When I left, the clinic employed 23 orthopedic surgeons, one physiatrist, and eight physician assistants,” stated Dr. Westergan. “We offered a variety of orthopedic services in multiple offices and locations.”
Dr. Westergan moved to Vermont this past October. He lives in Manchester with his wife Lisa, a diagnostic medical sonographer. Their daughter Alexis is a senior high school student on the north shore of Boston.
“Everyone at SVMC exhibits a strong moral compass and the desire to continuously improve patient care,” he added. “I am pleased to be a part of such a caring and collaborative team.”
Dr. Westergan is available at the Northshire campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. To schedule an appointment, call (802) 362-4440.
