Claudia A. Peters, MD, has joined the staff of the Northshire Campus of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) and will begin seeing patients on June 16.  For many in the Northshire seeking a medical doctor, her arrival is a welcome relief. “I hope to ease the stress that has been placed on the community,” stated Dr. Peters, a family physician with over 25 years experience.

Dr. Peters received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina and completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Maryland, where she also received a fellowship in faculty development. Dr. Peters also has a master’s degree in epidemiology and biostatistics from McGill University.

For more than 15 years, she has taught medical students as an associate professor of family medicine in Canada at both McGill University in Quebec and Queen’s University in Ontario.

Dr. Peters has most recently practiced at the Queen’s Student Health Service in Kingston, Ontario. She has special interests in adolescent psychiatry, developmental disabilities, and addictions. She also has experience in providing prison medical services in Canada.

“Moving to Vermont to be closer to family was an easy decision,” said Dr. Peters. “Where else could I find great people, a culturally rich atmosphere, and such beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy?”

Dr. Peters is also an accomplished player of the viola and a singer. “I realized that the creative opportunities in the Manchester area were just what I was looking for.” She enjoys the outdoors through various activities, including swimming, hiking, gardening, canoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Her two sons, Peter and Andrew, and her daughter, Lenora, are all currently pursuing advanced degrees.
