SVHC's Harvest Ball Raises Record Donations

November 27, 2015

BENNINGTON, VT—November 27, 2015—The 6th Annual Harvest Ball, at the Hubbell Homestead September 12, hosted a sold-out crowd of 353 people and raised more than $145,000 for SVHC.

The event, hosted by the Southwestern Vermont Health Care Foundation, honored two individuals with 2015 Vision Awards. Richard "Dick" Guerrero, MD, received the 2015 Health Care Leadership Award, and Roby Harrington, III received 2015 Distinguished Community Service Award.

“These two gentleman have a long history of generous volunteerism and thoughtful leadership in our community. We are extremely grateful for their contributions to SVHC and honored by their influence and involvement,” said David Meiselman, chairman of the SVHC Board of Trustees.

Guerrero accepted in honor of his friend and mentor Dr. Richard Davis. He emphasized the tremendous accomplishments in the field of medicine since the start of his career more than 40 years ago and credited SVHC’s success to its clinical teams. Harrington gave a moving acceptance that emphasized each of our roles in creating a caring community.

In addition to the awards, the event raised funds to support the purchase of a linear accelerator (linac), which delivers external beam radiation treatments for patients with cancer. The machine will be installed in the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center early in 2016.

“The new linac will provide enhanced clinical treatments, with greater ability to limit radiation to targeted tumors, while giving less exposure to neighboring normal tissues,” said Director of Radiation Oncology Matthew Vernon, MD, who spoke about the equipment at the event. “We will also be able to treat a broader array of cancers locally, thereby improving the patient experience.”

“This year’s Harvest Ball was an impressive show of support for bringing this state-of-the-art technology to our Cancer Center,” said SVHC’s President and CEO Thomas A. Dee, FACHE. “Because of the size of this investment and its potential to further improve patient care, we continue to raise funds for this important piece of equipment.”
