BENNINGTON—May 6, 2015—Residents of Pownal and Northern Berkshire County will soon be able to schedule primary care appointments closer to where they live. A new primary care office, SVMC Pownal Campus, will open in Pownal in the fall of 2015.
“Primary care is the best way to provide the highest quality and most affordable medical care for patients,” said Thomas A. Dee, FACHE, president and CEO of Southwestern Vermont Health Care. “That’s where health care reform is headed, and that is why improving access to primary care is a focus for SVHC.”
The new practice will be located less than one mile north of the Vt.-Mass. border.
Leaders at SVMC have been working with the Town of Pownal to meet all of the building and zoning requirements. BMA Architects have designed the building, and Vermont Medical Properties are building it.
“The building design includes everything we could want to provide a great experience for our patients,” said Doug Forth, executive director of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Medical Group. “It’s built for efficiency and patient comfort.”
The 5,000-square-foot medical practice will include 10 exam rooms and will initially house two primary care providers with room to add a third at any time. The practice will be able to accommodate hundreds of new patients, according to Forth.
The patient-centered space will feature a covered drop-off entrance, a pleasant waiting area, and plenty of natural light.
“Some of the services the practice will be capable of providing will be X-ray and visit-related lab testing. Providers will have access to electronic medical records and be able to integrate directly with SVMC resources,” Forth said.
“I have long thought that better access to health care would be a great improvement for Pownal citizens, and now the reality of an excellent community-oriented facility is here,” said Bill Botzow, Pownal’s representative to the Vermont House of Representatives. "We are fortunate that SVMC understands and acts to improve community health at the local level throughout our region.”
A ceremonial bricklaying event is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20 at the site of the new practice. The public is invited to attend. Please contact Beth Dillard at (802) 440-4239 for additional information.
