Keeping Your Balance

Balance —we all have it, some more than others. Have you ever wondered exactly what keeps you from falling down?

Good blance is important to a healthy lifestyle.

Think about it — our ability to maintain balance, whether still or in motion is an amazingly complex function. Balance depends on many things, including our senses, strength, and flexibility.  Like a lot of things, our balance tends to fade with age, and as balance fails, mobility suffers.

How many people do you know who are not as active as they used to be because they have a fear of falling? How many people do you know who walk with a cane or a walker?

Did you know that these people can, at any age, improve their balance?

Here at SVMC, we have a balance program designed to address deficits by targeting specific areas. Our therapists assess strength, flexibility, sensation, safety, and environment to design a program customized to a patient’s needs. We use computerized balance equipment and old fashioned strength training to improve balance and our patient’s quality of life.

There’s more information on our Balance Therapy page.
