Winter Training

Training outdoors in the winter.  Previously, I stopped training athletes when the cold weather came — since I do primarily speed, agility, and speed endurance training, this became difficult given the outdoor facilities which I had to use.

He's not thrilled to be getting a great winter workout.

I recently got a call from a summertime client, wondering if I would be willing to train him this winter.  My initial thought was "no," simply because I do not have access to indoor facilities.

After some thought, however, I get an idea — picture Rocky IV — remember when he's training in the snow in the former Soviet Union?  This is what the program is going to be like — a lot of "strongman" training, running in snow, and other alternative things.

So what does this mean to you?  Use your imagination for your winter time workouts - a lot of people go inside when the weather gets bad, but think of some things to be done outside.

It can be as simple as shoveling snow or splitting wood (talk about a workout).  It could be windsprints in the snow.  One good thing about this kind of training is that it confuses your body - doing something different is going to give you a better workout.

So put some thought into it and get creative - the treadmill or the weight machine can get pretty boring both mentally and physically.  As always, the kind of training I am describing is extreme, so it is advisable to consult your doctor prior to starting any kind of extreme training.
